Driveways in Stroud

What we see in Stroud

Stroud is built on valley sides, and almost every drive here is on a slope. Streets in Uplands, Rodborough and Cainscross have drives that climb or drop sharply from the road, often with retaining walls and steps beside them. Levels, grip and where the water goes are the first three things we look at.

A steep drive needs a surface with texture, so brushed tarmac, resin-bound with a coarser aggregate or textured block all work better than a smooth slab. Retaining walls and edgings carry real load here and have to be built for it. Mill terraces closer to the centre often have no frontage at all, so the work is steps, paths and small parking bays cut into the bank.

Questions

Common questions in Stroud

Can I get a dropped kerb on a steep Stroud street?

It depends on the gradient at the footway and on visibility. Gloucestershire County Council decides, and steep or narrow streets are often refused. We check before you spend anything.

Do the drainage rules apply on a slope?

Yes, and they matter more. Water running off a solid drive down to the highway is exactly what the rule is aimed at. A permeable surface, a cross-fall to a border or a channel drain across the entrance all deal with it.

How long does a sloping drive take?

Four to six days for most, longer where retaining walls or steps are rebuilt. Steep access slows muck-away and materials, and we allow for that in the quote.
